London’s HAELOS lie somewhere between the tribal get-up grooves of fellow-Londoners Jungle and sultry electronic outfit London Grammar…That’s a lot of London’s, I know. But where HAELOS set themselves apart, is in their gravitation to 90’s trip-hop vibes.
Singers Lotti Benardourt and Arthur Delaney’s voices come together to form one unified voice, atop Dom Goldsmith’s beats and samples. The voices are more a part of the beat than a standalone force driving the band’s sound. Take the single “The Sun Rising,” with the high-tone vocal sample guiding a journey like a gust of wind, as amen drum loops envelop the atmospheric voices:
To get an idea of HAELOS’ influences, listen to their Slumber Sessions mix, which opens with Maxinquaye-era Tricky into DJ Shadow’s “Midnight In A Perfect World”…they had my attention right then and there.
